How to Ask for Funding for an Information Governance Project

Often the biggest challenge of launching an Information Governance Program is securing funding. Competing with unlimited funding requests against limited budgets, it’s challenging getting your IG program funded among the budgetary noise, especially with the esoteric nature of IG. Hoping that senior management will simply recognize the need for IG is often ineffective.  This session will discuss smart, proven strategies for getting your program funded:

  • Developing IG Return on Investment and metrics, including four categories of ROI as well as anecdotal and formal models

  • Survey results of who typically pays for IG, including which groups typically fund what parts of a program

  • Determining how much to ask for and when, whether you should you seek full funding, or take an incremental approach

  • Creating IG funding messages that will resonate with senior management.  Assuming they don’t really care about records, how can message things they do care about

  • Getting out of the approved but not funded trap

  • Benchmarking your organization against peers, and other tactics that will get them to take notice

  • Funding case studies of how other in-house practitioners have garnered funding

Information Governance professionals understand the value that these programs bring to an organization. The challenge is communicating that value to senior management.  Join us for a lively discussion on how to move your program funding from “should do” to “will do.”
